THE BULLRING STATUE

It may surprise readers to know that the incomplete and much damaged remains of the statue that once graced the plinth at the middle of the Bullring in Eastfield Park, is still stored in a contractor’s yard in Northampton. The remains are in very poor condition. The statue of the man has completely gone; the boar has no face, and the rear end is broken; the dog does have a head, but various other bits are missing. The contractor has no use for the remains and has offered them to the Friends of Eastfield Park (FoEP). However, we have no funds to do anything with them and no place where they could safely be stored. They are cast iron and very heavy – too heavy to lift without mechanical help!
Legally, we believe the remains belong to West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) and they should decide what happens to them. However, we wish to know what residents think and we are requesting you to share your views using the form below. We know it is very tempting to be humorous or facetious over something like this, but we do want your serious opinions. Please be polite and constructive. We will pass on the views we get to WNC.
The form is unstructured, so you have a free hand to comment and not be constrained by our restrictions. You may think the remains should be scrapped; you may think they should be restored in some way (though a complete restoration is impossible as so much has gone). If you think they should be conserved, tell us how this should be done and where the conserved remains should be kept. Take everything into account, including the risk that the statue could be vandalised again!
